ALTARE

ALTARE, Franck Scala’s new furniture collection, extends directly from RELIEFS — his series of ceramic bas-reliefs — by revisiting its fragmented ornamental language, composed of sculpted and assembled stoneware tiles. It also continues a broader dialogue with the history of decorative arts.

Each piece draws inspiration from sacred architecture and liturgical furniture, particularly the design of religious altars carved in marble or stone. Conceived to sanctify space, these elements historically cultivated both solemnity and a sense of gathering.

By transposing these symbolic codes into the domestic sphere, the sculptor-designer seeks to elevate contemporary interiors and celebrate the rituals of everyday life. Functional yet contemplative, these works stand as collectible pieces that invite us to reconsider furniture as a true work of art.

The name ALTARE originates from the Latin Altare, which gave rise to the Italian Altare, carrying the dual meaning of “elevation” and “depth.” In Italian, Altare translates as “autel” in French—or simply “altar” in English.
